11. Marx’s Machine

Original post date: November 12, 2011. What the hell is this, Debbie?

*Debbienote: Time for the infamous Karl Marx. I don’t know the author of the book on Sexual Assault that I quoted, but I know the book is titled “Campus Sexual Assault Response Teams.” That particular chapter has an author mentioned, John Wesley Lowery, Ph.D. The Karl Marx works included the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844 (in part) – on Alienated Labor (or in this document, “Estranged Labor” starting on page 28). The quote at the bottom, however, is taken from Chapter I of the Manifesto of the Communist Party

10. Normalizing Society

Original post date: October 31, 2011. What the hell is this, Debbie?

*Debbienote: For this post, the assigned readings were “On Liberty” by John Stuart Mill and “Discourse and Truth: The Problematization of Parrhesia” by Michel Foucault. Basically, they talked about what it means to be truly free – in speech, and otherwise. Another book that I would recommend, for the sake of background information, is “Discipline and Punishment” by Michel Foucault, which sort of goes into detail about his point of view regarding liberty and how liberty sort of “evolved.”

4. Hume’s Utopia

Original post date: September 16, 2011. What the hell is this, Debbie?

*Debbienote: Here’s the Enquiry, if you’re interested in it. For this particular post, I am referring to Section II: Of the Origin of Ideas. For the class, we only read Sections I – V. The rest of it is a pretty good read, too. I’ve written more about my thoughts of the idea of a utopia here.

Women are of Lesser Importance, obviously.

The Trials of Lorena Bobbitt
by Melissa Weininger

*Debbienote: I’m not reproducing the article in its entirety, because it’s relatively long. I do, however, suggest that you read the article in its entirety. For the moment, I am only posting enough quotes to give appropriate context. Again, I strongly suggest you read the entire article – store it somewhere on your computer, or in your bookmarks or in your Google reader, and tag it as #problemswithsociety.

“Sex-Negative Education and the Spectre of Rape”

Sex-Negative Education and the Spectre of Rape
via Sex Positive Activism

*Debbienote: Dearest readers, this is a subject that is of utmost importance to me. As you may or may not know, this is a cause to which I have dedicated my life – that is, sexual assault-related outreach/advocacy/etc.

We all know what rape is, and anyone can be trained on sensitivity towards rape victims and how to handle such situations. This particular thought that I have stolen echoes many of my own thoughts about the “rape culture” in our country. In any case, it’s short, and I suggest that you read it. Then, talk to me about abstinence-only “sex education” that is frequently offered in schools.
