Warning: Your Daily Dose of Depression to Follow
“You can’t make it feel right when you know that it’s wrong.”
I got back from my 9a.m. class and started reading The Rabbi’s Cat for my World History class, and I started to fall asleep, simply because I just don’t sleep well these days. So, halfway through the book and after reading the same page three times, I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere, and I set it down and went to sleep.
I left my music playing in the background, as I was too tired to get off the bed and turn it off. This was no more than a long nap – I fell in and out of sleep repeatedly, never quit achieving deep sleep. At this stage of relatively light sleep, things that happen in the background (in the waking world) can have an effect* on your dreams. Also, it doesn’t take a music appreciation class to know that we often associate certain songs with certain memories or points in our lives (really, we talked about that in Music Appreciation and that thought had never occurred to people). Thus, it was a terrible idea for me to fall asleep with my iTunes library on shuffle, given my terrible luck and recent bouts of depression. I’ll share with you the memory I have associated with Kelly Clarkson’s “Already Gone.” **
