desiderare, patior

Passion comes from the Latin patior, meaning to allow or to submit, but also to endure and, perhaps most interestingly, to suffer.

Black Male Feminism

Why I Am A Male Feminist
by Byron Hurt

*Debbienote: It seems like I’m on a role here with the femenism (misspelling intentional). Add this to your perspective – the black male perspective; the black male who cares about women.

Whose fault is it if you are raped?

Seems like Pennsylvania has had a lot of problems in the sex crimes department lately:

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board thinks that it’s the fault of rape victims if they are raped after they’ve been drinking.

That’s right: In their new “Call the Shots” ad campaign, the state government agency is distributing posters that say things like “She didn’t want to do it, but she couldn’t say no.”1

From here, and more information here. See the actual ad campaign here.

Folks, let me just clarify: someone who is raped or sexually assaulted never asks for it. Never. Why should a man be able to go out drinking with all his friends and be allowed to get completely trashed, but not a woman, for fear of getting raped?

This is the problem with society today, readers.

“Your Innocence Will Not Save You”

Your Innocence Will Not Save You: Conservative Christianity and Childhood Sexual Abuse
by somaticstrength @ “It Is Better To Speak”

*Debbienote: The original blog post is very, very long. I have chopped out parts of it, with my edits denoted in [brackets]. I strongly urge you to go to the original post, linked above, and read it. It’s very important because this abuse is something that needs to be addressed.

I also hate making disclaimers on my own posts or any of the Stolen Thought series posts, but I do feel the need to make sure you’re aware that this is a very emotionally charged post. The author has a lovely writing style, and I did cut out a lot of context-dependent paragraphs (also because I didn’t want to post 3,000 words on here that weren’t even my own), but you should still be aware that it is emotionally charged.

“Sex-Negative Education and the Spectre of Rape”

Sex-Negative Education and the Spectre of Rape
via Sex Positive Activism

*Debbienote: Dearest readers, this is a subject that is of utmost importance to me. As you may or may not know, this is a cause to which I have dedicated my life – that is, sexual assault-related outreach/advocacy/etc.

We all know what rape is, and anyone can be trained on sensitivity towards rape victims and how to handle such situations. This particular thought that I have stolen echoes many of my own thoughts about the “rape culture” in our country. In any case, it’s short, and I suggest that you read it. Then, talk to me about abstinence-only “sex education” that is frequently offered in schools.
